How to get dark mode in the Shopify admin (2026)
Shopify has shipped dark mode for the mobile app and for POS, but the web admin at admin.shopify.com still has no switch for it. The request thread on the Shopify Community has been open for years. If you spend evenings in the admin, the white background is the first thing you notice.
The dark theme is already in the admin
Open the admin and look at the <html> element in DevTools. It carries a class called p-partial-theme-admin-next-light. Shopify's stylesheet also contains a full p-partial-theme-admin-next-dark theme with every color token defined: backgrounds, text, borders, status badges. Swap the class and the whole admin turns dark, including Polaris components, modals and the bulk editor. Shopify built it; it just never exposed a setting.
Turning it on with Shopify Admin Power-Up
- Install Shopify Admin Power-Up from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open any admin page and press Alt+Shift+D, or click the extension icon and set Dark mode to On or System.
- That is it. The setting syncs with your Chrome profile, so every admin tab and every store you manage gets it.
Why it is gray on gray, not black on white
Shopify's own dark tokens use a near black page background (#0a0a0a) with near white text (#eeeeee). That is a contrast ratio around 18:1, which looks sharp in a screenshot and tires the eyes after an hour. The extension remaps the neutral tokens so the page background is a dark gray (#262626), surfaces sit a step lighter, and body text is a light gray (#d7d7d7). Status colors (green Active, blue Draft, red out of stock) are left as Shopify designed them so nothing loses meaning.
If you prefer the original high contrast, the extension cannot give you that today; tell us at support and we will add a toggle if enough people ask.
Alternatives
- Dark Reader and similar extensions invert every site. They work on the admin but produce muddy colors on product images and status badges, and they cost CPU on long lists. Using Shopify's own theme avoids that.
- Chrome's "Auto dark mode" flag (chrome://flags) has the same image and color issues and applies to every site.
- Waiting for Shopify. Possible, but the request is old enough that we stopped waiting.
